(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lowering The Gaze)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

العَيْنُ رائِدُ القَلْبِ (الفِتَنْ)

which translates to

The eye is the scout of the heart (or of temptations).

This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of our eyes in shaping the state of our hearts and the trials we face.

To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "العَيْنُ" refers to the physical eye, but in this context, it symbolizes the power of sight and perception. "رائِدُ" means a scout or a lookout, someone who goes ahead to explore and assess the situation. "القَلْبِ" refers to the heart, which is not only the physical organ but also the center of our emotions, thoughts, and intentions. And finally, "الفِتَنْ" refers to trials, temptations, or tribulations that can lead us astray from the right path.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),

And do not follow that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse emphasizes the accountability of our senses, including our sight, and the responsibility we have to use them wisely.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises the believers,

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.

This verse highlights the importance of controlling our gaze and protecting our hearts from the temptations that can arise from what we see.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that our eyes serve as the scouts for our hearts. Just as a scout explores the surroundings and reports back to the main force, our eyes observe the world around us and transmit information to our hearts. If we allow our eyes to wander and indulge in forbidden sights, our hearts become vulnerable to the trials and temptations that can lead us astray.

For example, if we continuously expose ourselves to inappropriate content, whether through explicit images or immoral entertainment, our hearts become desensitized to the consequences of sin. Our perception of right and wrong becomes distorted, and we may find ourselves more inclined towards sinful actions. This is why it is crucial to be mindful of what we allow our eyes to see and to guard our hearts against the negative influences that can arise from our visual experiences.

On the other hand, if we use our eyes to seek knowledge, to admire the beauty of Allah's creation, and to look for opportunities to do good, our hearts will be nourished with righteousness and purity. Our perception of the world will be guided by the light of faith, and we will be more inclined towards acts of kindness, compassion, and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant in guarding their eyes and controlling what they see. Our eyes have a profound impact on the state of our hearts and the trials we face. By being mindful of our visual experiences and seeking to align them with the teachings of the Quran, we can protect our hearts from the temptations that can lead us astray. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to use our eyes in a way that brings us closer to Him and protects us from the trials of this world.
