لِكُلِّ دَوْلَة بُرْهَةٌ۔
Every nation has its moment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Government And Sovereignty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لِكُلِّ دَوْلَة بُرْهَةٌ۔" which translates to
Every nation has its moment.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and can be understood by analyzing the key words and their meanings.
The word (dawlah) "دَوْلَة" refers to a nation or a state. It encompasses a group of people who are bound together by a common identity, culture, and governance. Each nation has its own unique characteristics, challenges, and opportunities.
The word (burhah) "بُرْهَةٌ" is derived from the root word (baraha) "بَرَهَ", which means a period of time or a moment. It signifies a specific time frame or a turning point in the history of a nation. It is a critical juncture that can determine the fate and destiny of that nation.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Rum, verse 41:
Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].
This verse highlights the cyclic nature of nations, where they go through periods of corruption and decline. It is during these moments of turmoil and adversity that the destiny of a nation is shaped. The consequences of their actions become apparent, and they are given an opportunity to reflect and rectify their ways.
Another verse that sheds light on this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 42:
And [remember] when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you, but He sheltered you, supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things - that you might be grateful.
This verse reminds us of the early days of Islam when the Muslim community was small and faced persecution. Despite the challenges they faced, they persevered and eventually emerged victorious. This moment in history was a turning point for the Muslim nation, as it marked the beginning of their rise and establishment of a just society.
Drawing from these Quranic verses, we can understand the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement. Every nation goes through its own unique moments, whether they be moments of triumph or moments of adversity. These moments serve as opportunities for growth, reflection, and change.
For example, the Islamic Golden Age, which spanned several centuries, was a moment of intellectual and scientific advancement for the Muslim nation. It was during this period that Muslim scholars made significant contributions to various fields such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy. This moment of enlightenment showcased the intellectual prowess of the Muslim nation and left a lasting impact on human civilization.
On the other hand, the decline of the Muslim nation during certain periods of history, such as the colonization era, was a moment of introspection and awakening. It prompted Muslims to reflect on their shortcomings, seek knowledge, and strive for revival. This moment of adversity became a catalyst for change and a call for Muslims to return to the teachings of Islam.
Imam Ali's statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that their nation, like any other, will experience moments of both triumph and adversity. It is during these moments that they must reflect on their actions, seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and strive for positive change.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "لِكُلِّ دَوْلَة بُرْهَةٌ۔" emphasizes the cyclic nature of nations and the importance of recognizing and seizing the opportunities presented during critical moments. By studying the Quran and reflecting on the lessons from history, Muslims can navigate these moments with wisdom, perseverance, and a commitment to upholding the values of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in our journey as individuals and as a collective nation.
