اَلْعَمَلُ بِلا عِلْم ضَلالٌ۔
Action without knowledge is misguidance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Action without knowledge is misguidance.
This impactful saying highlights the importance of seeking knowledge before engaging in any action. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (action) "عَمَلُ" refers to any deed or act performed by an individual. It encompasses both physical actions and internal intentions. The word (without) "بِلا" emphasizes the absence or lack of something, in this case, knowledge. And finally, (misguidance) "ضَلالٌ" signifies being led astray or deviating from the right path.
To understand the significance of knowledge in Islam, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who lack it. It emphasizes that knowledge is a means of guidance and enlightenment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It is through knowledge that individuals can attain higher ranks and closeness to Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that knowledge is a prerequisite for any action to be considered righteous and guided. Without knowledge, our actions may be based on ignorance, assumptions, or personal desires, leading us away from the path of truth and righteousness.
For example, if a person performs a religious ritual without understanding its purpose or significance, their action may lack sincerity and true devotion. Similarly, if someone engages in a business transaction without knowledge of the laws and ethics governing it, they may unknowingly commit injustice or engage in prohibited practices.
Moreover, the consequences of acting without knowledge can be far-reaching. It can lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and even harm to oneself and others. By seeking knowledge, we equip ourselves with the necessary tools to make informed decisions, act responsibly, and fulfill our obligations as Muslims.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge throughout his life. His profound statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize knowledge acquisition and to ensure that our actions are rooted in understanding and wisdom.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
Action without knowledge is misguidance,
highlights the significance of seeking knowledge before engaging in any action. It reminds us that knowledge is a means of guidance, elevation, and righteousness. By seeking knowledge, we ensure that our actions are grounded in understanding, sincerity, and adherence to the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and may He guide us on the straight path.
