Hadith #8258

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-ghibahatu ayyatu al-munafiq." This Hadith can be translated as

Backbiting is the sign of a hypocrite.

In order to understand the essence of this Hadith, let us delve into the important words and concepts it contains.

Firstly, "ghibah" refers to the act of speaking ill of someone in their absence. It involves discussing their faults, flaws, or shortcomings behind their back. This act is highly condemned in Islam, as it violates the rights of individuals and tarnishes their reputation. O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and forbids backbiting among Muslims. Allah compares backbiting to the repulsive act of consuming the flesh of one's deceased brother, highlighting the abhorrence of this behavior. It is a clear indication that backbiting is a grave sin and should be avoided at all costs.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10-12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

Indeed, those who abuse believing men and believing women undeservedly - they bear upon themselves the slander and manifest sin. O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors in al-Madinah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little.

These verses highlight the consequences of backbiting and the harm it causes to individuals and society. Allah warns that those who unjustly abuse and slander others will bear the burden of their sins. Additionally, the verses address the issue of spreading rumors and the negative impact it has on the community. Allah threatens to incite the believers against those who persist in such behavior, emphasizing the severity of their actions.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith.
