Hadith #9037

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "ضادُّوا الكِبْرَ بِالتَّواضُعِ۔" This can be translated as

Counter arrogance with humility.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (kibr) "كِبْرَ" refers to arrogance, pride, and haughtiness. It is a negative trait that stems from a sense of superiority and self-importance. On the other hand, (tawadhu) "تَّواضُعِ" means humility, modesty, and humbleness. It is the opposite of arrogance and entails recognizing one's own limitations and weaknesses.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of humility and warns against arrogance. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

So that you may not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you.

This verse reminds us that whatever we possess is a blessing from Allah, and we should not let it lead us to arrogance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:37), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.

This verse highlights the insignificance of human beings in the grand scheme of creation and cautions against arrogance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to counter arrogance with humility. When faced with arrogance, we should respond with a humble and modest attitude. This approach has profound implications in our personal and social lives.
