— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Loss Of Hope)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

تَعْجيلُ اليَأسِ أحَدُ الظَّفَرَيْنِ

which translates to

Hastening the loss of hope [in others] is one of the two triumphs.

This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of not losing hope in difficult situations and the importance of maintaining a positive outlook.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words and their implications. The word (ta'jeel) "تَعْجيلُ" means "hastening" or "accelerating." It refers to the act of expediting or rushing the process of losing hope in others. The word (al-ya's) "اليَأسِ" means "loss of hope" or "despair." It signifies the feeling of giving up or losing faith in the possibility of a positive outcome.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that hastening the loss of hope in others is one of the two triumphs. This implies that there are two paths one can take in difficult situations: either to lose hope and despair, or to remain steadfast and hopeful. By choosing the latter, one achieves a triumph over their own negative emotions and circumstances.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of maintaining hope and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) even in the face of adversity. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Az-Zumar (39:53),

Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'

This verse reminds us that no matter how grave our sins or how difficult our circumstances may be, we should never lose hope in the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a reminder that Allah's mercy is vast and all-encompassing, and He is always ready to forgive those who sincerely repent.

Another verse that supports the message of Imam Ali's Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking strength and steadfastness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives. It teaches us to rely on Him for guidance, support, and resilience, even in challenging situations.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to never lose hope in the face of adversity. It encourages us to remain positive and steadfast, knowing that Allah's mercy and assistance are always available to us. By maintaining hope and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can overcome obstacles, find solutions to our problems, and ultimately achieve success in this world and the Hereafter.

Moreover, hastening the loss of hope in others can have detrimental consequences not only for the individual but also for society as a whole. When we lose hope in others, we undermine their potential for growth and improvement. This can lead to a negative cycle of discouragement and lack of motivation. On the other hand, by instilling hope and encouragement in others, we contribute to their personal development and create a positive and supportive environment.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of maintaining hope and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) even in the face of adversity. It encourages us to be a source of hope and encouragement for others, rather than hastening their loss of hope. By doing so, we not only achieve personal triumph over our own negative emotions but also contribute to the well-being and growth of society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to always remain hopeful and optimistic.
