Hadith #8912

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رُبَّ نُطْق أحْسَنُ مِنْهُ الصَّمْتُ۔

This can be translated as,

Many an utterance is such that silence is better than it.

This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of choosing silence over speaking in certain situations.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words used. The word (nuthq) "نُطْق" refers to speech or utterance, while (ahsanu) "أحْسَنُ" means better or more excellent. Lastly, (assamt) "الصَّمْتُ" signifies silence or refraining from speech.

And speak to people good [words]

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying, (Quran 68:48)

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance

This verse teaches us the importance of patience and avoiding unnecessary arguments or disputes. It encourages us to respond to negative speech with silence or with a gentle and respectful manner.

Moreover, silence can also be a form of worship. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 7:199)
