بِئْسَ الوَجْهُ الْوَقاحُ۔
The worst countenance is [that of] the shameless.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Shamelessness And The Shameless)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The worst countenance is [that of] the shameless.
This hadith highlights the negative characteristics of a shameless person and emphasizes the importance of maintaining modesty and dignity in one's behavior and appearance.
The word used in this hadith to describe the shameless person is (al-waqāh) "الْوَقاحُ". Al-waqāh refers to someone who lacks shame or modesty, someone who is audacious and impudent in their actions and words. It is a quality that goes against the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of humility, modesty, and self-respect.
To understand the significance of this hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of the righteous believers, saying, (Quran 25:63)
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace
This verse emphasizes the importance of humility and peacefulness in our interactions with others.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs the believers, (Quran 49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames
This verse highlights the prohibition of insulting and ridiculing others, as it goes against the principles of respect and dignity.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid adopting the characteristics of the shameless. A shameless person lacks self-respect and disregards the feelings and rights of others. They may engage in inappropriate behavior, use offensive language, and show no regard for modesty or decency.
The consequences of being shameless are far-reaching. It can lead to the erosion of moral values, the breakdown of social harmony, and the degradation of society as a whole. When individuals lack shame and modesty, they may engage in sinful acts without remorse or consideration for the consequences. This can lead to a decline in spirituality and a distancing from the teachings of Islam.
On the other hand, embodying the qualities of modesty and dignity brings numerous benefits. Modesty is a reflection of a person's inner piety and righteousness. It fosters humility, respect, and empathy towards others. Modest individuals are mindful of their actions and words, seeking to uphold the values and principles of Islam in their daily lives.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful saying serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for modesty and dignity in all aspects of life. By embodying these qualities, we can contribute to the betterment of society and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to adopt the characteristics of the righteous and protect us from the traits of the shameless.
