— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Adopt cheerfulness for it is indeed a trap for [ensnaring] affection.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali highlights the importance of having a cheerful disposition and its role in fostering love and affection among people.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (bashashah) "بَشاشَةِ" refers to cheerfulness, happiness, or a joyful demeanor. It is derived from the root word (basha) "بَشَّ", which means to smile or to be glad. The word (hibalatu) "حِبالَةُ" can be translated as a trap or a snare, while (al-mawaddah) "المَوَدَّةِ" means affection or love.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive and cheerful attitude in various verses. In Surah Al-Qasas, verse 77, Allah says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse highlights the importance of doing good and maintaining a positive outlook, even while striving for the Hereafter. By adopting a cheerful disposition, we can spread positivity and goodness in the world, which in turn leads to the love and affection of others.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, where Allah says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and backbiting. By adopting a cheerful disposition, we are less likely to engage in negative assumptions or speak ill of others. This leads to a healthier and more loving social environment, where affection and unity can thrive.
Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, advises us to adopt cheerfulness as a means to attract affection and love from others. When we approach others with a joyful demeanor, we create an atmosphere of positivity and warmth. People are naturally drawn to those who radiate happiness and positivity, and this can lead to the development of strong bonds and relationships.
Furthermore, a cheerful disposition can have a profound impact on our own well-being. It has been scientifically proven that a positive attitude can improve mental and physical health. By adopting cheerfulness, we not only attract affection from others but also enhance our own happiness and contentment.
However, it is important to note that adopting cheerfulness does not mean suppressing genuine emotions or pretending to be happy at all times. Rather, it is about cultivating a positive mindset and finding joy in the blessings of Allah. It is about facing challenges with resilience and maintaining a hopeful outlook, even in difficult times.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the power of cheerfulness in attracting affection and fostering love among people. By adopting a joyful demeanor, we create an environment of positivity and warmth. This not only benefits our relationships with others but also enhances our own well-being. Let us strive to embody this teaching of Imam Ali and spread happiness and love in our interactions with others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to adopt cheerfulness and attract affection from those around us.
