The tongue is the gauge of a human being.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The tongue is the gauge of a human being.

This impactful saying highlights the significance and power of our speech and the impact it has on our character and actions. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "lisan" in Arabic refers to the tongue, but it encompasses more than just the physical organ. It symbolizes our ability to communicate and express ourselves through speech. It is through our tongues that we convey our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. The word "mizan" means gauge or scale, which implies that the tongue serves as a measure of a person's true character and inner self.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of guarding our tongues and using them wisely. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse reminds us that we will be held accountable for our words and actions, and it is crucial to speak only with knowledge and understanding.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

This verse serves as a reminder that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is aware of everything we say, and we should be mindful of our speech at all times. Our words have the power to build or destroy, to bring happiness or sorrow, and to spread love or hatred.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound impact our words have on our overall character. It serves as a reminder that our speech reflects our innermost thoughts, intentions, and values. If our tongues are used to spread falsehood, engage in backbiting, or hurt others, it is a clear indication of a corrupt and unrighteous character.

Conversely, if we use our tongues to speak truth, offer kind words, and promote justice, it is a sign of a noble and righteous character. The tongue can be a powerful tool for spreading knowledge, encouraging good deeds, and fostering unity among Muslims. It is through our speech that we can inspire others, offer guidance, and bring about positive change in society.

The consequences of our words are far-reaching. The Prophet Muhammad () said, (Sunan Ibn Majah)

A person may speak a word that pleases Allah without giving it much importance, but because of it, Allah raises him in ranks. And a person may speak a word that angers Allah without giving it much importance, but because of it, he falls into the Hellfire.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we should strive to be mindful of our speech and use our tongues in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We should seek knowledge, speak the truth, and avoid engaging in gossip, slander, or any form of harmful speech. By doing so, we can purify our hearts, strengthen our relationships, and contribute positively to the Muslim community and society as a whole.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of our speech and its impact on our character. It urges us to be mindful of our words, to use them wisely, and to strive for righteousness in our communication. Let us remember that our tongues are not merely tools for communication but are a reflection of our inner selves. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to guard our tongues and use them in a manner that pleases Him.
