— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad (), his pure family, his noble companions, and all those who follow the path of righteousness.

The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

There is nothing that is more summoning of the removal of blessing and the hastening of chastisement than remaining steadfast upon injustice.

This impactful Hadith highlights the grave consequences of persisting in acts of injustice and oppression.

Let us delve into the key words of this hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (zawal) "زَوَالِ" refers to the removal or disappearance of blessings, while (ni'mah) "نِعْمَة" signifies the favors and blessings bestowed upon an individual. The term (ta'jeel) "تَعْجِيلِ" means hastening or speeding up, and (niqmah) "نِقْمَة" refers to chastisement or punishment. Finally, (iqaamah) "إقَامَة" denotes remaining steadfast or persistent.

To comprehend the implications of this hadith, we turn to the Quran, which provides guidance and support for our understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 46:

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, as well as the need to avoid disputes and conflicts. By engaging in injustice and oppression, one not only disobeys Allah's commandments but also risks losing the blessings and strength bestowed upon them. The removal of blessings is a consequence of persisting in acts of injustice, as it distances one from the mercy and favor of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 85, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns:

Then is it that you believe in a part of the Scripture and disbelieve in the other? So what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.

This verse highlights the consequences of cherry-picking and selectively adhering to the teachings of the Quran. Those who engage in injustice while claiming to believe in certain parts of the scripture will face disgrace in this worldly life and severe punishment in the Hereafter. Their persistence in injustice leads to the hastening of chastisement, as mentioned in the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Reflecting on this hadith, we realize that remaining steadfast upon injustice not only invites the removal of blessings but also accelerates the arrival of punishment. By persisting in acts of oppression, one distances themselves from the mercy and favor of Allah, thereby paving the way for their own downfall.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the grave consequences of injustice. His words serve as a reminder for Muslims to strive for justice and fairness in all aspects of life. By doing so, we not only preserve the blessings bestowed upon us but also protect ourselves from the hastening of chastisement.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to uphold justice and righteousness in our actions, and may He protect us from the removal of blessings and the hastening of punishment. Ameen.
