أفْضَلُ مِنْ طَلَبِ التَّوْبَةِ تَرْكُ الذَّنْبِ۔
Abandoning sins is better than seeking repentance [after sinning].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Piety)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Abandoning sins is better than seeking repentance [after sinning].
This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of avoiding sins altogether, rather than relying solely on seeking repentance after committing them.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (تَوْبَةِ) "tawbah" refers to repentance, which involves acknowledging one's mistakes, feeling remorse, and resolving to change one's behavior. The word (تَرْكُ) "tarak" means to abandon or leave something. And the word (ذَنْبِ) "dhanb" refers to sins or transgressions.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:190), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight against you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding transgressions, which are sinful acts that go beyond the limits set by Allah.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding harmful actions such as ridicule, insults, and offensive language, which are all forms of sin.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to prioritize abandoning sins over seeking repentance. This is because when we actively avoid sinful actions, we prevent ourselves from falling into the traps of temptation and transgression. By doing so, we protect our hearts and souls from the negative consequences of sin, and we maintain a state of purity and righteousness.
Moreover, abandoning sins reflects a higher level of self-discipline and self-control. It demonstrates our commitment to living a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and aligning our actions with His commands. It is a proactive approach that helps us build a strong spiritual foundation and develop a sense of taqwa (God-consciousness).
When we consistently strive to abandon sins, we cultivate a sense of moral responsibility and accountability. We become more aware of our actions and their potential consequences. This awareness motivates us to make better choices and avoid situations that may lead us towards sin. It empowers us to resist temptations and stay on the path of righteousness.
Furthermore, abandoning sins not only benefits us individually, but it also has a positive impact on society as a whole. When Muslims collectively strive to avoid sinful actions, it creates an environment of piety, justice, and harmony. It fosters a community that upholds moral values and promotes the well-being of its members. By setting a good example through our actions, we inspire others to follow suit and contribute to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of abandoning sins rather than solely relying on seeking repentance. It encourages us to actively avoid sinful actions, cultivate self-discipline, and maintain a state of purity and righteousness. By doing so, we protect ourselves from the negative consequences of sin, strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to abandon sins and lead a life that is pleasing to Him.
