Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

اِسْعَ في كَدْحِكَ، ولاتَكُنْ خازِناً لِغَيْرِكَ۔

This Hadith encourages us to strive hard in our work and not to be dependent on others. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (is'a) "اِسْعَ" in the Hadith means to strive or exert oneself. It implies putting in effort and working diligently towards achieving one's goals. This word emphasizes the importance of actively engaging in our work and not being complacent or lazy. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Surah An-Najm, 53:39)

And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives

This verse highlights the significance of striving in our endeavors and the direct correlation between effort and success.

The word (kadhek) "كَدْحِكَ" in the Hadith refers to one's labor or toil. It signifies the physical and mental effort that we put into our work. This word emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving our goals. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Surah Al-Balad, 90:4)

And We have certainly created man into hardship

This verse reminds us that life is not meant to be easy, and we must be prepared to face challenges and work hard to overcome them.

The phrase (wala takun khazinan lighayrik) "ولاتَكُنْ خازِناً لِغَيْرِكَ" in the Hadith advises us not to be a storekeeper for others. It implies that we should not rely on others to provide for us or be dependent on their resources. Instead, we should strive to be self-sufficient and contribute to society through our own efforts. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Surah An-Najm, 53:39)

And that man can have nothing but what he strives for

This verse emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility and self-reliance.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we can understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging us to be proactive and diligent in our work. He encourages us to strive for excellence, to put in our best effort, and to avoid relying on others for our sustenance. By doing so, we not only fulfill our own responsibilities but also contribute positively to society.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was a shining example of knowledge and hard work. His deep understanding of Islam and his tireless efforts to spread its teachings are well-known. He dedicated his life to serving Allah and the Muslim community, and his wisdom and knowledge continue to inspire Muslims to this day.
