اِخْلِطِ الشِدَّةَ بِرِفْق، وارْفُقْ ما كانَ الرِّفْقُ أوْفَقَ۔
Mix sternness with gentleness, and be gentle as long as gentleness is more befitting.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Social Interaction And Mingling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to mix sternness with gentleness and to be gentle as long as gentleness is more appropriate. This impactful saying highlights the importance of balance in our interactions and the need to adapt our approach based on the circumstances.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (shiddah) "شِدَّةَ" refers to sternness or severity, while (rifq) "رِفْق" denotes gentleness or kindness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to combine these two qualities, recognizing that there are situations where sternness is necessary, but also acknowledging the power of gentleness in fostering harmony and understanding.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:159):
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.
This verse emphasizes the importance of gentleness in dealing with others, as it can bring people closer and maintain unity.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us:
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the need for sternness in cases of oppression or injustice, but also emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness in resolving conflicts.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance in this Hadith encourages us to strike a balance between sternness and gentleness, adapting our approach based on the situation at hand. For example, when dealing with a disobedient child, sternness may be necessary to correct their behavior and teach them discipline. However, when consoling someone who is grieving, gentleness and empathy are more appropriate to provide comfort and support.
By following the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith, we can cultivate a balanced and compassionate approach in our interactions with others. This balance allows us to address wrongdoing and maintain justice, while also fostering understanding, empathy, and unity within our communities. It is through this combination of sternness and gentleness that we can navigate the complexities of life and strive towards a harmonious society.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strike the right balance between sternness and gentleness in our interactions. May He guide us to follow the path of the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and may He grant us success in this world and the hereafter.
