— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affluence And The Rich)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Affluence through [complete reliance on] Allah is the greatest affluence.
This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of relying solely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for all our needs and desires.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this hadith. The word (ghina) "غِنَى" refers to affluence, wealth, or self-sufficiency. It signifies a state of contentment and satisfaction, where one feels no lack or need. The word (billah) "بِاللّهِ" means through Allah or by relying on Allah. It highlights the source of true affluence, which is not material possessions or worldly wealth, but rather a deep connection and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance of this hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking sustenance and strength from Allah, recognizing that true affluence comes from Him alone.
Furthermore, in Surah At-Talaq (65:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us,
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.
This verse reinforces the concept of complete reliance on Allah, emphasizing that when we place our trust in Him, He will provide for us and grant us true affluence.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to recognize that material wealth and possessions are not the ultimate source of happiness and contentment. True affluence lies in our connection with Allah and our complete reliance on Him. When we rely on Allah for our needs, we free ourselves from the anxieties and worries that come with worldly possessions. We find peace and contentment in knowing that Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer.
This hadith also serves as a reminder that our focus should not be solely on accumulating wealth and possessions. Instead, we should strive to cultivate a strong relationship with Allah, seeking His pleasure and relying on Him in all aspects of our lives. This reliance on Allah brings about a sense of inner peace and tranquility, regardless of our material circumstances.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, encourages us to prioritize our spiritual well-being over worldly pursuits. He teaches us that true affluence is not measured by the abundance of material possessions, but rather by our connection with Allah and our reliance on Him.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true affluence lies in our complete reliance on Allah. Material wealth may come and go, but our connection with Allah is everlasting. By relying on Him, we find true contentment and inner peace. Let us strive to cultivate a strong relationship with Allah and seek affluence through Him alone. May Allah grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of this profound hadith.
