Turn to God-wariness, for indeed it is an impenetrable shield. Whoever turns to it, it protects him and whoever holds on to it, it preserves him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Wariness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of God-wariness, or "taqwa," as a shield that protects and preserves a person. Taqwa is a fundamental concept in Islam, referring to a state of consciousness and awareness of Allah's presence, which leads to righteous actions and avoidance of sins.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word "jannah" is used to describe taqwa as an "impenetrable shield." Jannah, often translated as paradise, is a place of ultimate protection and bliss. By likening taqwa to a shield, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights its role in safeguarding a person from the harms and temptations of this world.
The Hadith further states that whoever turns to taqwa, it protects them, and whoever holds on to it, it preserves them. This implies that taqwa acts as a shield in two ways: as a means of protection and as a means of preservation. When a person turns to taqwa, it becomes a source of refuge and defense against the vices and trials of life. It shields them from falling into sin and guides them towards righteousness.
To support this exegesis, we find numerous Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of taqwa and its role as a shield. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.
Here, Allah highlights that taqwa is the best provision for the journey of life, indicating its significance in protecting and guiding believers.
In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that the most honorable and protected individuals are those who possess taqwa.
Another verse that supports the concept of taqwa as a shield is found in Surah Al-Anfal (8:29), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
This verse highlights that taqwa acts as a criterion, distinguishing between right and wrong, and protecting believers from the consequences of their misdeeds.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that taqwa is not merely a superficial act of piety, but a comprehensive state of consciousness that permeates every aspect of a believer's life. It is a shield that guards against the spiritual and moral dangers of this world, preserving one's faith and guiding them towards righteousness.
By turning to taqwa, we seek refuge in Allah's guidance and protection. It motivates us to be mindful of our actions, thoughts, and intentions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. Taqwa empowers us to resist temptations and make choices that are pleasing to Allah, ultimately leading to a life of righteousness and spiritual growth.
The consequences of embracing taqwa are profound. It shields us from the negative influences of society, protects us from the harmful consequences of our own actions, and preserves our faith and integrity. Taqwa also brings us closer to Allah, as it is a manifestation of our love and reverence for Him. It serves as a constant reminder of our accountability and the need to strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of taqwa as an impenetrable shield. By turning to taqwa and holding on to it, we find protection and preservation in this world and the Hereafter. Let us strive to cultivate taqwa in our hearts and actions, seeking refuge in its embrace, and reaping the countless blessings and rewards it brings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to embody taqwa in our lives.
