— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِلْمُ أعْلى فَوْز" which translates to

Knowledge is the highest success.

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the immense value and significance of knowledge in the life of a Muslim.

Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The word (highest) "أعْلى" signifies the superior and elevated status of knowledge. It implies that knowledge surpasses all other forms of success and achievement. Finally, the word (success) "فَوْز" denotes attaining victory, prosperity, and fulfillment.

To comprehend the importance of knowledge in Islam, we turn to the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the significance of seeking knowledge. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. It implies that knowledge elevates an individual's status and brings them closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom, indeed, he has been granted abundant good.

This verse emphasizes that wisdom, which is derived from knowledge, is a divine gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a source of immense goodness and blessings in a person's life.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the superiority of knowledge over material possessions, worldly achievements, and even physical strength. Knowledge is a means of attaining true success, not only in this world but also in the hereafter. It enlightens the mind, purifies the soul, and guides individuals towards the path of righteousness.

When we reflect on the consequences of seeking knowledge, we realize its transformative power. Knowledge enables Muslims to understand the teachings of Islam, comprehend the Quran, and implement its principles in their lives. It equips them with the tools to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. Moreover, knowledge empowers individuals to contribute positively to society, solve complex problems, and make informed decisions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the importance of knowledge through his actions and teachings. His deep understanding of Islam allowed him to provide profound guidance to the Muslim community during his caliphate. His knowledge enabled him to resolve disputes, establish justice, and uphold the principles of Islam.

As Muslims, we should strive to acquire knowledge in all its forms. We should seek religious knowledge to deepen our understanding of Islam and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Simultaneously, we should also pursue worldly knowledge to contribute positively to society and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the paramount importance of knowledge in the life of a Muslim. It highlights that true success lies in the acquisition and application of knowledge. By seeking knowledge, we elevate our status, fulfill our purpose, and attain prosperity in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to seek knowledge and benefit from it, and may He grant us success in this life and the next.
