There is no piety like self-restraint.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Restraint)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاوَرَعَ كَالكَفِّ۔" This can be translated as,

There is no piety like self-restraint.

In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-restraint in attaining true piety and righteousness.

The word (wara') "ورع" in this Hadith refers to self-restraint, abstinence, and avoiding that which is doubtful or harmful. It encompasses the act of refraining from indulging in worldly desires and temptations, and instead, focusing on the path of righteousness and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the significance of self-restraint in Islam, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197:

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse emphasizes the importance of piety as the best provision for the journey of life. It is through self-restraint and consciousness of Allah's commands that one can attain true piety.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 199, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse encourages Muslims to practice self-restraint by avoiding the ignorant and their negative influences. It teaches us to be selective in our associations and to distance ourselves from those who may lead us astray.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-restraint because it is through this virtue that one can protect themselves from falling into sin and transgression. It is the key to maintaining a balanced and righteous life. Self-restraint allows us to control our desires and impulses, ensuring that we do not engage in actions that are displeasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

For example, self-restraint can be seen in the act of fasting during the month of Ramadan. Muslims are required to abstain from food, drink, and other physical desires from dawn until sunset. This act of self-restraint not only strengthens our willpower but also reminds us of the importance of controlling our desires and focusing on our spiritual growth.

Self-restraint also plays a crucial role in our interactions with others. It helps us to avoid backbiting, slander, and other harmful behaviors. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12:

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse reminds us to exercise self-restraint in our thoughts, words, and actions towards others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true piety is achieved through self-restraint. By exercising self-control, we can protect ourselves from falling into sin, maintain a balanced and righteous life, and cultivate a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through self-restraint that we can attain the ultimate goal of piety and righteousness, and strive to become better Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to practice self-restraint in all aspects of our lives.
