إذا مَلَكَ الأراذِلُ هَلَكَ الأفاضِلُ۔
When the vile become sovereigns, the dignified ones are ruined.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Government And Sovereignty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إذا مَلَكَ الأراذِلُ هَلَكَ الأفاضِلُ۔
This Hadith is a thought-provoking Hadith that carries deep wisdom and insight. Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith to better understand its significance.
The word (aradhil) "أراذِلُ" refers to individuals who are vile, wicked, and morally corrupt. These are people who lack integrity, righteousness, and noble qualities. They are driven by their base desires and are inclined towards evil actions. On the other hand, the word (afadhil) "أفاضِلُ" refers to individuals who are dignified, honorable, and possess noble qualities. They are known for their righteousness, piety, and moral excellence.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find verses that support the message of this Hadith. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:37), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And the disbelievers plan was not but a mistake.
This verse highlights the flawed and misguided nature of the disbelievers' plans and actions. It serves as a reminder that those who are wicked and vile will ultimately fail in their endeavors.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
This verse emphasizes that those who do not seek power, status, or corruption in this world will be rewarded in the Hereafter. It highlights the importance of righteousness and moral excellence.
Now, let us reflect on the wise message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that when individuals who lack moral integrity and noble qualities come into positions of power and authority, it leads to the downfall and ruin of those who possess dignity and righteousness. This is a universal truth that can be observed throughout history and in various societies.
When the vile become sovereigns, they abuse their power, exploit the weak, and promote corruption. They disregard justice, fairness, and the well-being of the people. On the other hand, the dignified ones, who uphold moral values and strive for righteousness, are marginalized, oppressed, and their voices are silenced.
The consequences of this imbalance are far-reaching. Society suffers from injustice, inequality, and moral decay. The values of honesty, compassion, and justice are eroded, leading to a breakdown in social cohesion and harmony. The righteous individuals, who could have contributed positively to society, are marginalized and their potential is wasted.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for righteousness, uphold moral values, and work towards establishing justice and fairness in society. It calls upon us to resist and challenge the rule of the wicked and corrupt, and to support and uplift those who embody dignity and righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was a shining example of knowledge, wisdom, and moral excellence. His life and teachings are a testament to the importance of upholding noble qualities and resisting the influence of the wicked. As Muslims, we should strive to follow in his footsteps and emulate his character.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences that arise when individuals lacking moral integrity and noble qualities come into positions of power. It calls upon us to strive for righteousness, uphold moral values, and work towards establishing justice and fairness in society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the path of righteousness and protect us from the influence of the wicked.
