Death is soothing.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Death)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْمَوْتُ مُرِيحٌ" which translates to "Death is soothing." This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encapsulates the true essence of death and its significance in the life of a believer.

To understand the depth of this statement, we must delve into the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 57: (Quran 29:57)

Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.

This verse reminds us that death is an inevitable reality that every soul will experience. It is a journey that every human being must undertake, regardless of their status, wealth, or power.

The concept of death being soothing may seem paradoxical at first, as it is often associated with pain, grief, and separation. However, when we reflect upon the teachings of the Quran, we realize that death is not the end, but rather a transition to the eternal life. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 64: (Quran 29:64)

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

Death, in the eyes of a believer, is a gateway to the eternal abode where they will be reunited with their Creator and rewarded for their deeds. It is a moment of liberation from the trials and tribulations of this world, and a chance to attain the ultimate peace and tranquility in the presence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the true nature of death. He recognized that it is not something to be feared or dreaded, but rather embraced as a means of attaining eternal bliss. His statement, "Death is soothing," reflects his deep understanding of the purpose of our existence and the ultimate goal of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

When we contemplate the idea of death being soothing, it can serve as a powerful motivation for us to lead a life of righteousness and piety. It reminds us to prioritize our actions and intentions, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all that we do. It encourages us to detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits of this world and focus on the eternal rewards that await us in the Hereafter.

Moreover, the concept of death being soothing also serves as a reminder of the temporary nature of this worldly life. It prompts us to reflect upon the transient nature of our existence and encourages us to invest our time and energy in actions that will benefit us in the eternal life. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran, verse 185: (Quran 3:185)

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "Death is soothing" reminds us of the profound truth that death is not the end, but a transition to the eternal life. It encourages us to lead a life of righteousness and piety, focusing on the ultimate goal of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It serves as a powerful motivation to detach ourselves from the temporary pleasures of this world and invest in actions that will benefit us in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding and wisdom to embrace death with tranquility and prepare for the eternal life.
