— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِلْمُ أحَدُ الحَياتَيْنِ" which translates to
Knowledge is one of the two lives.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of knowledge in the life of a Muslim.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to understand its true meaning and implications. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. It encompasses all forms of knowledge, including religious, scientific, and practical knowledge. Knowledge is not limited to a specific field but encompasses all aspects of life.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes knowledge as (one of the two lives) "أحَدُ الحَياتَيْنِ". This phrase emphasizes the vital role that knowledge plays in the life of a Muslim. It signifies that knowledge is not merely a means of acquiring information, but it is a source of life itself. Just as physical life sustains our bodies, knowledge nourishes and sustains our souls.
The importance of knowledge in Islam is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. It implies that knowledge elevates a person's status and brings them closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation and growth. It is through knowledge that believers can attain higher ranks in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the consequences of possessing or lacking knowledge. Knowledge empowers individuals to make informed decisions, seek truth, and navigate through the challenges of life. It enables Muslims to understand their religion, fulfill their obligations, and contribute positively to society. On the other hand, a lack of knowledge can lead to ignorance, confusion, and deviation from the right path.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, recognized the transformative power of knowledge. His own life serves as a testament to the importance of seeking knowledge. He was not only a great warrior and leader but also a scholar and jurist. His knowledge and understanding of Islam guided his actions and decisions, making him an exemplary role model for Muslims.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the significance of knowledge in their lives. It is a reminder to continuously seek knowledge, both religious and worldly, and to utilize it for the betterment of oneself and society. Muslims are encouraged to engage in lifelong learning, to seek knowledge from authentic sources, and to apply it in their daily lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the pivotal role of knowledge in the life of a Muslim. It highlights the transformative power of knowledge and its ability to nourish and elevate the soul. Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge, understand their religion, and utilize knowledge for the betterment of themselves and society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and benefit from it in this life and the hereafter.
