اَلمُرُوءَةُ إنْجازُ الوَعْدِ۔
Magnanimity is fulfilling one’s promise.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Magnanimity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المروة إنجاز الوعد" which translates to
Magnanimity is fulfilling one's promise.
This concise statement holds great significance and carries a wise message for all Muslims.
The word (al-murū'ah) "المروة" refers to magnanimity, nobility, and honor. It encompasses the qualities of integrity, righteousness, and fulfilling one's obligations. It is a characteristic that reflects the highest moral and ethical standards. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of fulfilling one's promises and commitments.
This concept of fulfilling promises is not only emphasized in the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), but it is also reinforced in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:34),
And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling commitments and reminds Muslims that they will be held accountable for their promises on the Day of Judgment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse serves as a reminder to Muslims to honor their agreements and fulfill their obligations, whether they are formal contracts or informal promises made to others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also aligns with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of honesty and integrity in fulfilling promises, as it is a characteristic of a true believer.
Fulfilling one's promises has far-reaching consequences in both personal and societal contexts. On an individual level, it builds trust and strengthens relationships. When a person consistently fulfills their promises, they are seen as reliable and trustworthy. This fosters a sense of security and stability in personal relationships.
On a societal level, the fulfillment of promises is the foundation of a just and harmonious society. When individuals honor their commitments, it leads to a society based on justice and fairness. It promotes cooperation, mutual respect, and the well-being of all members of the community.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the importance of upholding our promises and commitments. It is a reflection of our character and a manifestation of our faith. By fulfilling our promises, we not only gain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but we also contribute to the betterment of our relationships and society as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the significance of magnanimity and fulfilling our promises. It is a reminder to Muslims to uphold their commitments, as it is a reflection of their integrity and righteousness. By fulfilling our promises, we strengthen our relationships, build trust, and contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to fulfill our promises and obligations, and may He bless us with the qualities of magnanimity and righteousness.
