(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forbearance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الحلم فدام السفيه" which translates to

Forbearance is a means of silencing the foolish.

This profound saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of forbearance and its effectiveness in dealing with the ignorant and foolish individuals.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (al-hilm) "الحلم" refers to forbearance, patience, and self-restraint. It is the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of provocation or ignorance. The term (fidam) "فدام" means a means or a way, while (as-safiyah) "السفيه" refers to the foolish or ignorant person.

To comprehend the significance of forbearance, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes its importance. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:133-134)

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the qualities of the righteous, among which is the ability to restrain anger and forgive others. By practicing forbearance, one not only earns the pleasure of Allah but also attains a higher spiritual rank. It is through forbearance that we can overcome our own ego and respond to ignorance with wisdom and patience.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan, Allah describes the characteristics of the servants of the Most Merciful, stating, (Quran 25:63)

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse exemplifies the behavior of those who possess forbearance. They respond to the ignorant with words of peace, choosing to diffuse conflicts rather than escalate them. By doing so, they not only silence the foolish but also promote harmony and understanding.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the power of forbearance. He exemplified this virtue throughout his life, even in the face of extreme adversity. One notable example is the incident of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, where the Prophet Muhammad () and his companions faced opposition and insults from the Quraysh. Despite the provocation, the Prophet () and his companions exercised forbearance and responded with patience and wisdom. This approach eventually led to the establishment of peace and the spread of Islam.

In light of this Hadith, we can understand that forbearance is not a sign of weakness, but rather a manifestation of strength and wisdom. It allows us to control our emotions and respond to ignorance with patience and understanding. By practicing forbearance, we can silence the foolish and promote a peaceful and harmonious society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of forbearance in dealing with the ignorant and foolish. It encourages us to exercise patience and self-restraint, responding to provocation with wisdom and peace. By doing so, we not only silence the foolish but also promote harmony and understanding within our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the virtue of forbearance and follow the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
