Hadith #5937

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic phrase "قَد يَدُومُ الضُّرُّ" from the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) translates to

Sometimes suffering may last [for long].

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the reality of human existence, where trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. It reminds us that adversity is not always temporary; it can persist for an extended period.

To understand the deeper meaning of this hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155:

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse emphasizes that trials and hardships are a test from Allah, and they can encompass various aspects of our lives, including fear, hunger, loss of wealth, and even loss of loved ones.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?

This verse reminds us that faith is not merely a proclamation but a journey that involves facing challenges and enduring hardships. It is through these trials that our faith is tested and strengthened.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that suffering is not always short-lived. It can persist for an extended period, testing our patience, resilience, and faith. However, it is crucial to understand that enduring suffering does not mean we are abandoned by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). On the contrary, it is a means for us to draw closer to Him, seek His help, and develop our character.

The prolonged nature of suffering can have profound effects on an individual. It can lead to feelings of despair, hopelessness, and questioning the wisdom of Allah's decree. However, as Muslims, we must remember that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the All-Wise and All-Knowing. He knows what is best for us, even when we struggle to understand the reasons behind our hardships.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages us to persevere and remain patient during times of prolonged suffering. It reminds us that our trials are not in vain and that there is wisdom and purpose behind them. Just as a seed needs time to grow into a strong tree, our character and faith are refined through the endurance of hardships.

Moreover, this hadith teaches us the importance of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during times of difficulty. It is during these moments that we should turn to Him in sincere supplication, seeking His guidance, mercy, and relief. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186:

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,

Sometimes suffering may last [for long],

serves as a reminder that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. It encourages us to remain patient, seek Allah's help, and trust in His wisdom and decree. Through enduring hardships, we have the opportunity to strengthen our faith, develop our character, and draw closer to our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the patience and resilience to navigate through the challenges of life and may He reward us abundantly for our steadfastness.
