Piety is a shield.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Piety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْوَرَعُ جُنَّةٌ" which translates to

Piety is a shield.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims of all times. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (al-wara') "الْوَرَعُ" refers to piety, righteousness, and God-consciousness. It encompasses a deep sense of awareness and fear of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), which leads one to avoid sinful acts and strive for moral excellence. It is a shield that protects a person from the temptations of this world and safeguards their faith.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of piety in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous (أَتْقَاكُمْ). Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that the true measure of nobility and superiority lies in righteousness and piety. It is not based on one's lineage, wealth, or worldly achievements. Thus, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) echoes the Quranic message by emphasizing the significance of piety as a shield that elevates a person's status in the sight of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah commands the believers to observe piety during the pilgrimage, saying,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is piety (ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse teaches us that piety is not only a shield against sin but also a means of attaining closeness to Allah. It is the best provision for the journey of life, as it strengthens our connection with the Divine and guides us towards righteous actions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that piety acts as a shield in various aspects of our lives. It shields us from the harmful consequences of sinful behavior, protects our faith from doubts and temptations, and guards our hearts against the negative influences of this world.

For example, when faced with the temptation to engage in dishonesty, a person of piety will refrain from such actions due to their fear of Allah. This shield of piety prevents them from falling into the trap of deceit and preserves their integrity.

Similarly, when confronted with trials and tribulations, a person of piety finds solace and strength in their connection with Allah. They turn to Him in prayer, seeking His guidance and support. This shield of piety shields them from despair and helps them navigate through life's challenges with resilience and trust in Allah's plan.

Moreover, the shield of piety also extends to our interactions with others. A person of piety is mindful of their words and actions, treating others with kindness, justice, and respect. This shield prevents them from causing harm or spreading discord, fostering a harmonious and compassionate society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Piety is a shield

highlights the significance of cultivating piety in our lives. It serves as a shield that protects us from the pitfalls of sin, strengthens our relationship with Allah, and guides our behavior towards righteousness. Let us strive to embody this shield of piety, seeking Allah's pleasure and attaining success in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the ability to uphold piety and benefit from its blessings.
