(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opportunity And Its Loss)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ناهَزَ الفُرْصَةَ أمِنَ الغُصَّةَ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities and the benefits that come from doing so. To fully understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of some key words.

The word (nahaza) "ناهَزَ" in this Hadith means to seize or take hold of something. It implies actively pursuing and making the most of an opportunity that presents itself. This word conveys a sense of urgency and determination, urging Muslims to be proactive in their lives.

The term (al-fursah) "الفُرْصَةَ" refers to an opportunity or a favorable moment. It signifies a chance that arises in one's life, whether it be in the form of a job offer, a chance to do good, or a moment of spiritual growth. It is a moment that can potentially lead to positive outcomes and blessings.

The word (al-ghussah) "الغُصَّةَ" translates to distress or hardship. It represents the difficulties and challenges that one may face if they fail to seize the opportunity. By not taking advantage of the chance presented, one may miss out on potential benefits and find themselves in a state of regret or distress.

To further understand the significance of seizing opportunities, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This ayah highlights the importance of utilizing time wisely and making the most of every opportunity to engage in righteous deeds and seek truth.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds Muslims that the worldly life is temporary and fleeting. Therefore, it is crucial to seize the opportunities presented to us in order to attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and secure our place in the Hereafter.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can see that it encourages Muslims to actively seek and make the most of the opportunities that come their way. By doing so, they can avoid the distress and regret that may arise from missed chances. Seizing opportunities allows individuals to grow spiritually, contribute positively to society, and fulfill their purpose in life.

For example, if a person is presented with an opportunity to help those in need, whether it be through volunteering or donating, they should seize the chance to do so. By taking action and making a difference in the lives of others, they not only benefit those in need but also experience personal growth and fulfillment.

Furthermore, seizing opportunities can lead to personal and professional growth. If a person is offered a job opportunity that aligns with their skills and interests, they should actively pursue it. By seizing this opportunity, they can advance their career, gain new experiences, and contribute to their own personal development.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds Muslims of the importance of seizing opportunities. By actively pursuing and making the most of the chances that come their way, they can avoid distress and regret. This Hadith encourages Muslims to be proactive in their lives, seek righteousness, and contribute positively to society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seize the opportunities that come our way and use them to benefit ourselves and others.
