— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Faith)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الإيمانُ أفْضَلُ الأمانَتَيْنِ" which translates to

Faith is the better of the two trusts (or securities).

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance and superiority of faith over any worldly possessions or material wealth.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (Iman) "إيمان" refers to faith or belief in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (). It encompasses a deep conviction in the heart, accompanied by righteous actions. (Amanatayn) "أمانَتَيْنِ" refers to two trusts or securities. It signifies the responsibilities and obligations that are entrusted to an individual.

To understand the profoundness of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of faith in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah says,

Indeed, the believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.

This verse highlights that true believers are those who have faith in Allah and His Messenger, and they do not hesitate to sacrifice their wealth and lives for the sake of Allah. Their faith is the driving force behind their actions and their dedication to the cause of Islam.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah states,

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

This verse emphasizes that true righteousness lies in having faith in Allah and fulfilling the various obligations that come with it. It is not merely about outward rituals, but rather about sincere belief and righteous actions that benefit others.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. By stating that faith is the better of the two trusts, he reminds us that no worldly possession or material wealth can compare to the value and importance of faith. Faith is the foundation upon which all other aspects of our lives should be built.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. Through this Hadith, he teaches us that faith is not just a belief, but a responsibility and a trust that we must uphold. It is a guiding light that directs our actions and decisions, and it is what truly defines our character.

When we prioritize faith over worldly possessions, we are motivated to use our wealth and resources in ways that align with the teachings of Islam. We become more generous and charitable, seeking to benefit those in need and fulfill our obligations towards them. Our faith becomes the driving force behind our actions, and we strive to establish justice, promote goodness, and alleviate the suffering of others.

Conversely, when we prioritize material wealth over faith, we may become consumed by greed, selfishness, and a disregard for the well-being of others. Our actions may be driven by personal gain rather than the principles of Islam. This can lead to a society plagued by injustice, inequality, and a lack of compassion.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the paramount importance of faith in our lives. It is through faith that we find true security and fulfillment. By prioritizing faith over worldly possessions, we are motivated to use our resources in ways that benefit others and uphold the principles of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to strengthen our faith and fulfill our responsibilities as true believers.
