ما عَلِمَ مَنْ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ بِعِلْمِهِ۔
He who does not act upon his knowledge has not truly gained knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما عَلِمَ مَنْ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ بِعِلْمِهِ۔
This can be translated as,
He who does not act upon his knowledge has not truly gained knowledge.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also implementing it in our lives.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words. The word (knowledge) "عَلِمَ" refers to the understanding and awareness of information or facts. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The word (act) "يَعْمَلْ" means to put knowledge into practice, to act upon what one knows. And finally, the word (he who) "مَنْ" refers to any individual who possesses knowledge.
This Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and its application in various verses. For example, in Surah Al-Imran (3:110), Allah says,
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.
This verse highlights the responsibility of Muslims to not only possess knowledge but also to act upon it by enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong.
Another verse that supports the Hadith is in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:44), where Allah says,
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
This verse admonishes those who preach righteousness but fail to implement it in their own lives. It serves as a reminder that knowledge without action is incomplete and ineffective.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful motivation for Muslims to not only seek knowledge but also to apply it in their daily lives. It reminds us that true knowledge is not simply about accumulating facts and information, but rather about transforming ourselves and our actions based on that knowledge.
When we act upon our knowledge, we become agents of positive change in society. Our actions reflect the values and principles we have learned, and we become a source of guidance and inspiration for others. Conversely, when we neglect to act upon our knowledge, we not only deprive ourselves of the benefits of that knowledge but also fail to fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.
The consequences of not acting upon knowledge are far-reaching. It leads to a stagnant and superficial understanding of Islam, where knowledge remains theoretical and disconnected from practical application. It also hinders personal growth and spiritual development, as true growth can only be achieved through the implementation of knowledge.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we must ask ourselves: Are we truly gaining knowledge if we do not act upon it? Are we striving to implement the teachings of Islam in our lives? Are we using our knowledge to benefit ourselves and others?
As Muslims, we should strive to embody the teachings of Islam in both our knowledge and actions. We should constantly seek knowledge and apply it in our lives, striving to be a living example of the principles and values we hold dear. By doing so, we not only gain true knowledge but also fulfill our purpose as servants of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and ambassadors of Islam.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to act upon our knowledge and may He bless us with the ability to be true seekers and implementers of knowledge.
