صِحَّةُ الوُدِّمِنْ كَرَمِ العَهْدِ۔
Soundness of friendship is part of honouring one’s promise.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affection And Friendship)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
صِحَّةُ الوُدِّمِنْ كَرَمِ العَهْدِ۔
This can be translated into English as:
Soundness of friendship is part of honoring one's promise.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (sihhatu) "صِحَّةُ" in this Hadith refers to the soundness or authenticity of something. It implies that a true and genuine friendship is one that is built on trust, loyalty, and sincerity. It is a friendship that remains steadfast and unwavering in its commitment.
The term (wuddi) "وُدِّ" is derived from the root word "ود" which means love, affection, and friendship. It signifies a deep and genuine bond between individuals, characterized by mutual care, support, and goodwill.
The word (karami) "كَرَمِ" refers to the act of honoring or fulfilling one's promise. It emphasizes the importance of keeping one's word and remaining true to the commitments made in a friendship. It highlights the ethical and moral responsibility that comes with forming and maintaining relationships.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of fulfilling promises and maintaining trust in various verses.
In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says: (Quran 17:34)
And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
This verse highlights the obligation to fulfill commitments and promises, as they will be questioned on the Day of Judgment. It emphasizes the importance of integrity and honesty in all aspects of life, including friendships.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah: (Quran 5:1)
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling contracts and agreements, which includes the promises made in friendships. It encourages Muslims to uphold their commitments and maintain trust in all relationships.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that a true friendship is not merely based on superficial connections or temporary benefits. It is a bond that is built on trust, loyalty, and the fulfillment of promises. A sincere friend is one who remains loyal and trustworthy, even in challenging times.
When we honor our promises and commitments in friendships, we strengthen the foundation of trust and deepen the bond between individuals. This leads to a harmonious and supportive relationship, where both parties can rely on each other for support, guidance, and companionship.
Conversely, neglecting or breaking promises erodes trust and damages the fabric of friendship. It creates doubt, uncertainty, and can lead to the breakdown of relationships. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to uphold the values of trustworthiness and integrity in all their interactions, including friendships.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be true and loyal friends, honoring our promises and commitments. We should prioritize the well-being and happiness of our friends, offering them support, love, and understanding. By doing so, we not only fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims but also contribute to the creation of a harmonious and compassionate society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of soundness in friendship and the necessity of honoring our promises. It emphasizes the significance of trust, loyalty, and sincerity in building and maintaining strong bonds. By upholding these values, we can foster genuine and lasting friendships that bring joy, support, and fulfillment to our lives as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in embodying the teachings of this Hadith and grant us the ability to be true and loyal friends to one another.
