Hadith #8583

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لِكُلِّ إقْبال إدْبارٌ۔" which translates to

For every advance [and progress] there is a retreat [and a regress].

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and can be understood in light of the teachings of the Quran.

In order to fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. The word (iqbal) "إقْبال" refers to moving forward, making progress, or advancing towards a goal. On the other hand, the word (idbar) "إدْبار" signifies retreating, regressing, or moving away from a goal. Therefore, the Hadith highlights the inherent nature of progress and regression, emphasizing that they are intertwined and inseparable.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the concept conveyed in this Hadith. One such verse is found in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155-156)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return'

This verse reminds us that in the journey of life, we will face trials and tribulations that may cause setbacks and losses. However, it is through patience and reliance on Allah that we can overcome these challenges and continue to progress. The retreat or regression experienced during difficult times serves as a test of our faith and resilience.

Another verse that resonates with the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 47:31)

And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you and the patient, and We will test your affairs

This verse reminds us that progress and advancement come through striving and perseverance. It is through the tests and trials that Allah puts us through that we can develop our character, strengthen our faith, and ultimately progress towards our spiritual goals. The retreat or regression experienced during these tests is a temporary phase that allows us to reflect, learn, and grow.
