Hadith #4547

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الزَّوجَةُ المُوافِقَةُ إحدَى الرَّاحَتَينِ

which translates to

An agreeable wife is one of the two comforts.

This Hadith highlights the importance of having a harmonious and compatible relationship with one's spouse.

Let us delve into the meanings of some key words in this Hadith. Firstly, "الزَّوجَةُ" refers to the wife, the female partner in a marital relationship. Secondly, "المُوافِقَةُ" means agreeable or compatible, indicating a wife who is in harmony with her husband in terms of temperament, values, and goals. Lastly, "إحدَى الرَّاحَتَينِ" translates to

one of the two comforts,

signifying that a spouse who is agreeable brings solace and tranquility to the heart.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ar-Rum (30:21),

And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.

This verse emphasizes the divine wisdom behind the creation of spouses, as they are meant to bring tranquility and comfort to one another.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women.

This verse highlights the concept of marital compatibility, as spouses are created from the same essence and are meant to complement and support one another.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) underscores the significance of having an agreeable wife.
