Hadith #3568

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The conditions of this world are based on convention whereas the conditions of the Hereafter are based on merit.

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the stark contrast between the temporal nature of this world and the eternal nature of the Hereafter.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (conditions) "أحْوالُ" refers to the circumstances, situations, or states that one experiences. Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the temporary nature of the conditions of this world. It emphasizes that the true purpose of life lies in seeking forgiveness from Allah and striving for His approval, which are the foundations of merit in the Hereafter.

Another verse that complements the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse reminds us that while wealth and worldly possessions may bring temporary adornment to our lives, it is the enduring good deeds that hold true value in the sight of Allah. These good deeds, based on merit, are what will ultimately determine our success in the Hereafter.
