Hadith #5040

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The foundation of administration is justice.

This impactful saying emphasizes the importance of justice in the realm of governance and leadership. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (milak) "مِلاكُ" in Arabic refers to the foundation or basis upon which something is built. It signifies the fundamental principle or cornerstone of a particular matter. In this context, it refers to the essential element that forms the basis of administration or governance. The word (siyasa) "سِّياسَةِ" refers to the art of governance or the principles and methods employed in managing the affairs of a state or community. Finally, the word (al-'adl) "الْعَدْلُ" means justice, fairness, and equity.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness in various aspects of life. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25),

Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.

This verse highlights the role of the messengers and the divine scriptures in establishing justice among people.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands the believers,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even in difficult circumstances, even if it goes against one's own interests or the interests of loved ones.
