Hadith #3704

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

الدُّنْيا مَعْدِنُ الشَّرِّ، ومَحَلُّ الغُرُورِ۔

This translates to:

This world is the source of evil and the place of deception.

Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ma'din) "مَعْدِنُ" refers to a source or origin, indicating that this world is the origin of evil. It is from this world that evil actions, thoughts, and desires arise. The word (sharr) "شَّرِّ" means evil or harm, encompassing all forms of wrongdoing and immorality. The word (mahall) "مَحَلُّ" refers to a place or location, signifying that this world is the place where deception and falsehood are prevalent.

To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-An'am (6:32):

And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah, so will you not reason?

This verse emphasizes that the worldly life is merely a fleeting amusement, filled with distractions and deceptions. It reminds us that the true abode of everlasting happiness lies in the Hereafter for those who fear Allah and seek His pleasure.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20):

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse vividly portrays the transitory nature of worldly life, highlighting its allurements and the delusions it creates. It emphasizes that the true value lies in the Hereafter, where eternal rewards and punishments await.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the inherent dangers and temptations present in this world. It cautions us against becoming attached to worldly possessions, desires, and ambitions, which can lead us astray from the path of righteousness. This Hadith encourages us to reflect upon the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and the importance of focusing on our ultimate goal, which is the attainment of Paradise and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
