لاعَيْشَ أهْنَأُ مِنَ العافِيَةِ۔
There is no life more pleasant than [life] with good health.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Well-Being)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاعَيْشَ أهْنَأُ مِنَ العافِيَةِ۔
This can be translated as,
There is no life more pleasant than [life] with good health.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance and blessings of good health.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith. The word "عَيْشَ" refers to life or livelihood, encompassing both physical and spiritual aspects. "أهْنَأُ" means more pleasant, happier, or more content. And "العافِيَةِ" refers to good health, well-being, or soundness.
The significance of good health is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the importance of taking care of ourselves and not engaging in actions that harm our well-being.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:32), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.
This verse underscores the sanctity of life and the responsibility to preserve it, which includes taking care of our own health.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that good health is a blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and that it enhances the quality of our lives. When we are in good health, we are able to fulfill our obligations towards Allah and others more effectively. We can engage in acts of worship, serve our communities, and contribute positively to society.
Good health allows us to experience the joys of life and appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us. It enables us to enjoy the beauty of nature, engage in physical activities, and spend quality time with our loved ones. It also provides us with the energy and vitality to pursue our goals and aspirations.
On the other hand, when we suffer from poor health, we may face various challenges and limitations. Our ability to fulfill our responsibilities may be hindered, and we may experience physical and emotional distress. This can impact our overall well-being and hinder our spiritual growth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to prioritize our health and take proactive measures to maintain it. It encourages us to adopt a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a nutritious diet, adequate rest, and seeking medical attention when needed. By doing so, we can strive to achieve a state of well-being that allows us to lead fulfilling lives and fulfill our duties as Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of good health in our lives. It reminds us that there is no greater pleasure than living a life with good health. By taking care of our physical and mental well-being, we can better fulfill our obligations towards Allah and others, and experience the joys and blessings of this life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us all good health and enable us to appreciate and utilize this blessing to the fullest.
