أحْسَنُ العِلْمِ ما كانَ مَعَ العَمَلِ۔
The best knowledge is that which is accompanied by action.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best knowledge is that which is accompanied by action.
This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also putting it into practice. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (ahsanu) "أحْسَنُ" means "the best" or "the most excellent." It signifies the highest level of quality and superiority. The word (al-'ilm) "العِلْمِ" refers to knowledge, which encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The word (ma) "ما" means "that which" or "what." The word (kana) "كانَ" is a verb that denotes existence or being. Lastly, the word (ma'a) "مَعَ" means "with" or "accompanied by," indicating the importance of combining knowledge with action.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the principle highlighted in this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:2-3),
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes the significance of not only having faith but also performing righteous deeds. It is through action that our knowledge is truly manifested and beneficial to ourselves and others.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not expect us to possess knowledge beyond our capabilities. However, it is incumbent upon us to utilize the knowledge we have acquired to the best of our abilities. Therefore, the best knowledge is not measured by its quantity but rather by the sincerity and commitment with which it is put into action.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of action in conjunction with knowledge. Merely possessing knowledge without implementing it in our lives is futile. It is akin to having a treasure but never utilizing it for our benefit. The true value of knowledge lies in its practical application, as it has the power to transform our lives and the lives of those around us.
For instance, if we acquire knowledge about the importance of honesty, it is only through practicing honesty in our daily interactions that we can truly embody this virtue. Similarly, if we learn about the significance of compassion, it is by showing kindness and empathy towards others that we can truly manifest this attribute. Knowledge without action is like a body without a soul; it lacks vitality and purpose.
The consequences of neglecting the integration of knowledge and action are evident in our society today. We witness individuals who possess vast amounts of knowledge but fail to implement it in their lives. This leads to a disconnect between their beliefs and their actions, resulting in hypocrisy and a lack of positive impact on society. Islam encourages us to bridge this gap by actively applying our knowledge in our daily lives, thereby becoming true ambassadors of our faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the best knowledge is one that is accompanied by action. It highlights the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also implementing it in our lives. By combining knowledge with action, we can truly embody the teachings of Islam and positively impact ourselves and those around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to put our knowledge into practice and be among those who strive for excellence in both knowledge and action.
