(Ghurar al-Hikam: Divine Decree And Destiny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Divine decree works contrary to the estimations and planning [of the people].
This beautiful saying highlights the concept of divine decree and its relationship with human efforts and planning.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (maqādir) "مقادير" refers to divine decree or predestination. It signifies the predetermined course of events that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has ordained for His creation. The word (tajrī) "تجري" means to flow or run, indicating the continuous and unalterable nature of divine decree. The words (taqdīr) "تقدير" and (tadbīr) "تدبير" refer to human estimation and planning, respectively. They represent the efforts and strategies that individuals undertake to achieve their goals.
To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the concept of divine decree and its relationship with human endeavors. In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 30, Allah says,
And they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
This verse highlights that while humans may make plans and estimations, ultimately, it is Allah's decree that prevails. His knowledge and wisdom surpass human understanding, and His plans are perfect and flawless.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, Allah states,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah's decree takes into account our capabilities and limitations. He knows what is best for us and what we can handle. Therefore, even if our plans do not align with our desires, we can trust that Allah's decree is in our best interest.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims that while we should strive and plan for our goals, we must also recognize the ultimate authority of Allah's decree. It teaches us humility and reliance on Allah's wisdom. Our efforts and planning should be accompanied by the understanding that Allah's decree may differ from our expectations, and that is part of His divine plan.
For example, a person may plan meticulously for a certain outcome, but due to unforeseen circumstances, their plans may not come to fruition. In such situations, it is essential to remember that Allah's decree is at work. Perhaps there is a greater wisdom behind the alteration of our plans, such as protection from harm or the opportunity for growth and learning. Trusting in Allah's decree allows us to accept the changes in our lives with patience and gratitude.
Moreover, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that our efforts and planning should be aligned with the principles and teachings of Islam. We should seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in our decision-making processes. By doing so, we ensure that our endeavors are in accordance with the divine will and are more likely to be blessed and successful.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the profound concept of divine decree and its relationship with human efforts and planning. While we are encouraged to plan and strive for our goals, we must always remember that Allah's decree supersedes our estimations and strategies. By aligning our efforts with the teachings of Islam and trusting in Allah's wisdom, we can find solace and contentment in the realization that His plan is perfect and encompasses all aspects of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to accept His decree and guide us in our endeavors.
