Being independent of [and not seeking anything from] kings is the best...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Kings And Rulers)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Being independent of [and not seeking anything from] kings is the best kingship.

Let us delve into the meaning and significance of this impactful saying in light of the Quran.

The word (ghina) "غِنَى" in Arabic refers to being self-sufficient, content, and free from any need or dependency. It signifies a state of inner richness and satisfaction. The word (muluk) "مُلُوكِ" refers to kings or rulers. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the superiority of being self-sufficient and not seeking anything from rulers or those in positions of power.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of relying solely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and not placing our trust in worldly authorities. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:55),

Your ally is none but Allah and [therefore] His Messenger and those who have believed - those who establish prayer and give zakah, and they bow [in worship].

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that true power and sovereignty lie in being independent of worldly authorities and relying solely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Seeking favors or benefits from rulers can compromise one's integrity, principles, and ultimately, their faith.

This Hadith also highlights the importance of self-sufficiency and contentment. When one is content with what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon them, they are not easily swayed by the allure of power or material possessions. They are not dependent on the approval or favors of others, including rulers. This contentment brings inner peace and tranquility, allowing one to focus on their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the betterment of society.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this principle throughout his life. Despite his immense knowledge, wisdom, and capabilities, he never sought power or authority for personal gain. Instead, he dedicated himself to serving Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the Muslim community, regardless of his position or status.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true kingship lies in being self-sufficient and not seeking anything from worldly rulers. It emphasizes the importance of relying solely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and being content with what He has provided. By embodying these principles, Muslims can maintain their integrity, strengthen their faith, and work towards the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in our lives.
