عَلَى العالِمِ أنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ مالَمْ يَعْلَمْ، وَيُعَلِّمَ النّاسَ ما قَدْ عَلِمَ۔
It is upon the scholar to learn that which he does not know and to teach the people what he has learnt.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the responsibility of a scholar to continuously seek knowledge and to share it with others. The Arabic phrase
عَلَى العالِمِ أنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ مالَمْ يَعْلَمْ
translates to
It is upon the scholar to learn that which he does not know.
This highlights the importance of scholars constantly expanding their knowledge and understanding, even beyond what they already know.
The Hadith further states
وَيُعَلِّمَ النّاسَ ما قَدْ عَلِمَ
which means
and to teach the people what he has learnt.
This emphasizes the responsibility of scholars to share their knowledge with others, to educate and guide the community. It is not enough for a scholar to acquire knowledge for personal gain; rather, they must actively disseminate it to benefit others.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and spreading it for the betterment of society. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9):
Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding to attain a higher level of consciousness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights that those who possess knowledge will be elevated in status by Allah. It emphasizes the significance of acquiring knowledge and using it for the betterment of oneself and society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages scholars to continuously seek knowledge, even beyond their current understanding. This reflects the importance of intellectual growth and the pursuit of truth. By constantly expanding their knowledge, scholars can better serve the community and guide others towards righteousness.
Moreover, the Hadith emphasizes the duty of scholars to share their knowledge with others. This duty stems from the belief that knowledge is not meant to be hoarded but rather to be shared for the benefit of society. By imparting knowledge, scholars contribute to the intellectual and spiritual development of the community, fostering a culture of learning and enlightenment.
The consequences of scholars fulfilling their responsibilities are far-reaching. When scholars actively seek knowledge and share it with others, they contribute to the intellectual and moral progress of the ummah. They become beacons of guidance, guiding individuals towards the path of righteousness and enlightenment. By disseminating knowledge, scholars empower individuals to make informed decisions, to challenge ignorance, and to promote justice and compassion in society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the responsibility of scholars to continuously seek knowledge and to share it with others. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of seeking knowledge and spreading it for the betterment of society. Scholars who fulfill their duty contribute to the intellectual and moral progress of the ummah, guiding individuals towards righteousness and empowering them to make informed decisions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless our scholars and grant us all the ability to seek knowledge and benefit from it.
