مَنِ انْتَصَرَ بِأعْداءِ اللّهِ اِسْتَحَقَّ الْخِذْلانَ۔
Whoever seeks support from the enemies of Allah deserves to be forsaken.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Seeking Support)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنِ انْتَصَرَ بِأعْداءِ اللّهِ اِسْتَحَقَّ الْخِذْلانَ۔
This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims about the consequences of seeking support from the enemies of Allah. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us analyze the key words of this Hadith. The word (intasara) "انْتَصَرَ" means to seek support or victory, while (a'daa'illahi) "أعْداءِ اللّهِ" refers to the enemies of Allah. The word (istahaqqa) "اِسْتَحَقَّ" means to deserve or be worthy of, and (al-khizlaan) "الْخِذْلانَ" means forsaken or abandoned.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking support and alliance only with those who are righteous and obedient to Him. In Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah says,
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:9), Allah warns us,
Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
These verses clearly indicate that seeking support from the enemies of Allah, those who fight against the truth and oppress the believers, is not only discouraged but also deserving of abandonment and forsakenness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate source of guidance and protection, and aligning oneself with His enemies goes against His divine commandments.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and understanding of the Quran, highlights the consequences of seeking support from the enemies of Allah. Such individuals, by aligning themselves with those who oppose the truth, distance themselves from the mercy and guidance of Allah. They expose themselves to the wrath and punishment of Allah, as they have chosen to side with those who reject His authority.
This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious in their alliances and associations. It urges us to align ourselves with those who uphold the principles of righteousness and justice, and to distance ourselves from those who oppose the truth and oppress the believers. By doing so, we ensure that we remain under the protection and guidance of Allah, and avoid the consequences of being forsaken by Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of seeking support only from those who are aligned with the truth and righteousness. It serves as a warning against aligning ourselves with the enemies of Allah, as it leads to abandonment and forsakenness. Let us strive to follow the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and seek alliances that are pleasing to Allah and in line with His commandments. May Allah protect us from the influence of His enemies and guide us on the straight path.
