— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also acting upon it. Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (knowledge) "عِلْمٌ" refers to the understanding and awareness of facts, principles, and information. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Knowledge is a great blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is highly regarded in Islam. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that knowledge alone is not sufficient.

The phrase (without action) "بِلا عَمَل" emphasizes the importance of putting knowledge into practice. Mere acquisition of knowledge without implementing it in our lives is futile. It is like having a treasure but not utilizing it. Our actions should reflect the knowledge we possess, for it is through our deeds that we demonstrate our understanding and commitment to the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states that this knowledge, devoid of action, becomes a

- a proof or evidence against the servant before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This means that on the Day of Judgment, our knowledge will testify against us if we fail to act upon it. Our negligence in implementing what we know will be a witness to our lack of sincerity and commitment.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), (Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity)

This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not expect from us more than what we are capable of. He has given us the ability to acquire knowledge and act upon it. Therefore, it is our responsibility to utilize this gift to the best of our abilities.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Asr (103:2-3), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds)

This verse emphasizes the inseparable connection between faith and action. Belief alone is not sufficient; it must be accompanied by righteous deeds. Our knowledge should lead us to perform good deeds, such as acts of worship, kindness, and justice.

Let us reflect on the consequences of neglecting the implementation of knowledge. If we possess knowledge but fail to act upon it, we risk falling into hypocrisy and arrogance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:4), (And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?)

This verse warns us about those who possess knowledge but fail to act upon it. They may appear righteous and knowledgeable on the surface, but their lack of action exposes their true nature. They deceive themselves and others, thinking that they are immune to criticism and accountability. However, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) sees through their facade and condemns their hypocrisy.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to not only seek knowledge but also to implement it in their lives. Knowledge without action is meaningless and can even be detrimental to our spiritual growth. We must strive to align our actions with the teachings of Islam, for it is through our deeds that we demonstrate our sincerity and commitment to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to act upon the knowledge we acquire and make our actions a proof of our devotion to Him.
