Hadith #4880

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

دَعِ السَّفَهَ فَإنَّهُ يُزْري بِالمَرْءِ ويَشينُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

Shun dimwittedness, for verily it belittles a person and dishonors him.

Let us delve into the meaning of important words in this Hadith. The word (safaha) "سَّفَهَ" refers to dimwittedness or foolishness. It signifies the lack of wisdom, understanding, and intellect. The word (yuzri) "يُزْرِي" means to belittle or degrade, while (yashinuhu) "يَشِينُهُ" means to dishonor or disgrace someone.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge, wisdom, and intellect in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:30)

And [recall] when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They said, 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' Allah said, 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.'

This verse highlights the superiority of Adam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his descendants over the angels due to their knowledge and intellect. It emphasizes the importance of using one's intellect to understand and fulfill the purpose of creation. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 49:6)

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith.
