اَلقَوْلُ بِالحَقِّ خَيْرٌ مِنَ العَيِّ والصَّمْتِ۔
Speaking the truth is better than inarticulateness and silence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of speaking the truth over remaining silent or being inarticulate. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The word (al-qawl) "القول" in the Hadith refers to speech or expression. It encompasses both verbal and non-verbal communication. The word (bil-haqq) "بالحق" means "with the truth." It signifies the importance of speaking truthfully and honestly, without any distortion or falsehood. The word (khayr) "خير" means "better" or "superior." It implies that speaking the truth is not only good but also superior to other forms of communication. The words (al-ayy) "العي" and (al-samt) "الصمت" refer to inarticulateness and silence, respectively. These words highlight the significance of expressing oneself and not remaining silent or unable to communicate effectively.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of speaking the truth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:30),
That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.
This verse highlights that adhering to the commandments of Allah, which include speaking the truth, is the best course of action.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:81), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say, 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'
This verse emphasizes the eternal nature of truth and the fleeting nature of falsehood. It encourages Muslims to always speak the truth, as it is a fundamental aspect of their faith.
Imam Ali's statement holds profound wisdom and practical implications. Speaking the truth is not only a moral obligation but also a means to establish justice, maintain trust, and foster healthy relationships within society. When we speak the truth, we uphold the principles of honesty, integrity, and transparency. This, in turn, leads to a more harmonious and just society.
Moreover, speaking the truth requires courage and conviction. It is not always easy to speak up, especially when faced with opposition or adversity. However, the rewards of speaking the truth are immense. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119),
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
This verse highlights that those who speak the truth will be in the company of the righteous and will be blessed by Allah's guidance and protection.
On the other hand, inarticulateness and silence can sometimes be detrimental. Remaining silent in the face of injustice or wrongdoing can perpetuate oppression and allow falsehood to prevail. It is our duty as Muslims to speak out against injustice and wrongdoing, using our words to advocate for truth and justice. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:104),
And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of speaking the truth. It is a call to uphold honesty, integrity, and justice in our words and actions. Speaking the truth requires courage, but it leads to the betterment of society and the attainment of Allah's pleasure. Let us strive to be truthful in our speech and actions, following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his profound knowledge and unwavering commitment to truth. May Allah guide us all to the path of truth and righteousness.
