اَلمَعْرُوفُ سِيادَةٌ۔
Benevolence is authority.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المعروف سيادة" which translates to "Benevolence is authority." This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims in understanding the true essence of leadership and authority.
The word "ma'ruf" in Arabic refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and righteousness. It encompasses all actions that are recognized as virtuous and morally upright. It includes acts such as charity, justice, compassion, and fairness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting that true authority and leadership lie in the practice of benevolence and righteousness.
This concept of benevolence being the essence of authority is beautifully reflected in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that true nobility and superiority are not based on wealth, lineage, or worldly power, but rather on righteousness and piety. The one who possesses the qualities of goodness and righteousness is the one who holds true authority in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking authority and support from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself. It is through His guidance and blessings that true authority can be attained.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that benevolence is not just a means to gain authority, but it is the very essence of authority itself. When a leader acts with kindness, compassion, and fairness, they inspire others to follow their example. Such a leader gains the respect, trust, and loyalty of their followers, creating a harmonious and just society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this principle throughout his life. His knowledge, wisdom, and benevolence were unparalleled. He treated people with kindness and justice, regardless of their social status or background. His leadership was based on the principles of Islam, and he always prioritized the welfare and well-being of the community.
The consequences of practicing benevolence as a form of authority are far-reaching. It fosters unity, harmony, and cooperation among individuals and communities. It promotes social justice, equality, and compassion. It creates an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and respected. It paves the way for the establishment of a just and equitable society, where the rights of all individuals are protected.
As Muslims, we are called upon to reflect on this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody the principles of benevolence in our daily lives. Whether in positions of leadership or not, we can all contribute to the betterment of society by practicing acts of kindness, justice, and compassion. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also contribute to the establishment of a just and righteous society, in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the ability to practice benevolence in our lives.
