Hadith #5104

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "فِعْلُ الشَّرِّ مَسَبَّةٌ۔" which translates to

Doing evil is a [means of] revilement.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sharr) "شَّرِّ" in this Hadith refers to evil or harm. It encompasses any action or behavior that goes against the teachings of Islam and causes harm to oneself or others. It is important to note that evil can manifest in various forms, such as physical harm, emotional distress, or spiritual corruption.

To understand the consequences of engaging in evil, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),

And do not throw yourselves into destruction.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding actions that lead to harm and destruction. Engaging in evil not only harms others but also has detrimental effects on one's own well-being and spiritual growth.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:81),

And say: 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'

This verse highlights the transient nature of falsehood and evil. While evil may seem appealing or advantageous in the short term, it is ultimately destined to perish. Therefore, engaging in evil is not only morally wrong but also futile, as it leads to nothing but revilement and destruction.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the consequences of engaging in evil through this Hadith. By engaging in evil, one not only harms others but also tarnishes their own reputation and character. The act of reviling others through evil deeds reflects poorly on the individual and diminishes their moral standing in the eyes of others.

To further illustrate the consequences of evil, we turn to Surah Al-Anfal (8:47), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And do not be like the ones who came forth from their homes insolently and to be seen by people and avert [them] from the way of Allah.

This verse highlights the negative consequences of engaging in evil actions for the sake of showing off or seeking attention. Such behavior not only leads to revilement but also distances one from the path of Allah and His guidance.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to abstain from engaging in evil. By doing so, we not only protect ourselves from harm but also uphold our moral integrity and spiritual well-being. Engaging in evil leads to revilement, tarnishes our reputation, and distances us from the path of Allah. Let us strive to be individuals who promote goodness, righteousness, and compassion, thereby earning the pleasure of Allah and the respect of our fellow Muslims.
