مَنْ نَدِمَ فَقَدْ تابَ۔
One who is remorseful has repented.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Remorseful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ نَدِمَ فَقَدْ تابَ۔
This can be translated into English as,
One who is remorseful has repented.
In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of remorse as an essential aspect of true repentance.
To better understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word (nadima) "نَدِمَ" refers to feeling regret or remorse for one's actions or choices. It signifies a deep sense of sorrow and guilt, acknowledging the wrongfulness of one's behavior. The word (taba) "تابَ" means to repent, to turn back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with sincerity, seeking His forgiveness and guidance.
The importance of remorse and repentance is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Tahrim (66:8),
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow.
This verse highlights the need for sincere repentance, which includes feeling remorse for our sins and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'
This verse reassures us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is ever ready to forgive those who sincerely repent, regardless of the magnitude of their sins.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the transformative power of remorse. When we genuinely feel regret for our wrongdoings, it signifies a change in our hearts and a recognition of our faults. This remorse becomes the catalyst for repentance, as it motivates us to seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to rectify our actions.
True repentance involves not only feeling remorse but also taking practical steps to amend our ways. It requires us to abandon sinful behavior, seek forgiveness from those we have wronged, and make a sincere commitment to follow the path of righteousness. By doing so, we demonstrate our genuine remorse and our determination to change for the better.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of remorse and repentance in our spiritual journey. It teaches us that true repentance is not merely a superficial act of seeking forgiveness, but a profound transformation of the heart and a genuine desire to rectify our mistakes.
Let us reflect upon our actions and sincerely feel remorse for our wrongdoings. May we turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with true repentance, seeking His forgiveness and guidance. May we strive to become better individuals, constantly seeking self-improvement and spiritual growth. And may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in His infinite mercy, accept our repentance and guide us on the path of righteousness.
