Hadith #8935

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ساءَ لَفْظُهُ ساءَ حَظُّهُ۔

This powerful statement carries a wise message about the consequences of our words and their impact on our lives. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sa'a) "ساءَ" in the Hadith refers to something evil, harmful, or negative. It encompasses all forms of negativity, including harmful speech, lies, slander, and hurtful words. The word (lafzuhu) "لَفْظُهُ" refers to one's words or speech. Therefore, this Hadith warns us about the consequences of using harmful or negative language.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good speech and warns against the consequences of evil speech. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:36)

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse highlights the importance of being mindful of our words and actions. We are accountable for what we say, and our speech reflects the state of our hearts. If our words are filled with negativity, lies, or harm, it will have a detrimental effect on our lives and our hereafter. Allah warns us that we will be questioned about our words, and it is essential to use our speech wisely and responsibly.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qalam, where Allah says, (Quran 68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse refers to the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and serves as a reminder for all Muslims to follow his example. The Prophet (ﷺ) was known for his impeccable speech and kindness towards others. His words were filled with wisdom, compassion, and guidance. By emulating his character, we can ensure that our words are a source of goodness and blessings.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), as the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet (ﷺ), possessed immense knowledge and wisdom. His words were a reflection of his deep understanding of Islam and his commitment to justice. Therefore, when he warns us about the consequences of evil speech, we must take heed and reflect upon our own words.

The Hadith reminds us that our words have consequences not only in this world but also in the hereafter. If we engage in harmful speech, we will attract negativity into our lives. Our relationships will suffer, and we will be held accountable for the pain we have caused. On the other hand, if we choose our words carefully, speak truthfully, and spread kindness, we will reap the benefits of a blessed and harmonious life.

Let us reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to improve our speech. May Allah guide us to use our words wisely, to speak the truth, and to spread love and compassion in our interactions with others. May we be mindful of the consequences of our words, both in this world and the hereafter. And may Allah grant us the ability to follow the noble example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his purified progeny.
