How many a person is envied for the blessing he has been given [in this world] while he is among those who will be destroyed in the Hereafter.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Enviable)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
This Hadith highlights a profound truth about the nature of worldly blessings and their consequences in the Hereafter.
Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (maghbūt) "مَغْبُوط" refers to someone who is envied or admired for the blessings they possess. (ni'matih) "نِعْمَتِهِ" refers to the blessings bestowed upon an individual by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). (al-hālikīn) "الهالِكينَ" refers to those who will be destroyed or ruined in the Hereafter.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Imran, verse 14: (Surah Al-Imran, 3:14)
This verse highlights the allure of worldly desires, such as wealth, children, and possessions. These blessings can be a source of envy and admiration for others. However, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us that these are merely temporary enjoyments of this worldly life. The true measure of success lies in the Hereafter, where the consequences of our actions will be realized.
In Surah Al-Kahf, verse 45, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) further emphasizes this point: (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:45)
This verse presents the analogy of worldly life being like water that descends from the sky and mixes with the plants of the earth, eventually becoming dry and scattered by the wind. It serves as a reminder that the material possessions and pleasures of this world are transient and fleeting.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith draws our attention to the fact that many people are admired and envied for their worldly blessings, while they may be heading towards destruction in the Hereafter. This Hadith serves as a warning against being deceived by the temporary allure of worldly possessions and forgetting the ultimate purpose of our existence.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that true success lies in utilizing the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in a manner that pleases Him and secures our place in the Hereafter. It reminds us to be mindful of our actions, intentions, and the consequences they will have in the eternal life to come.
As Muslims, we should strive to prioritize our spiritual growth and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over worldly gains. We should remember that the true measure of success lies not in the admiration of others for our worldly blessings, but in our adherence to the teachings of Islam and our efforts to attain salvation in the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize the true value of blessings and guide us on the path of righteousness. May He protect us from being among those who are admired in this world but face destruction in the Hereafter. Ameen.
