Be rational and you will discern.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اِعْقِلْ تُدْرِكْ۔" which translates to
Be rational and you will discern.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims of all backgrounds.
The word (i'qil) "اِعْقِلْ" is derived from the root word (aql) "عَقْل", which refers to intellect, reason, and rationality. It encompasses the ability to think critically, make sound judgments, and understand the world around us. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging Muslims to utilize their intellect and reason in order to gain knowledge and insight.
The word (tudrik) "تُدْرِكْ" is derived from the root word (daraka) "دَرَكَ", which means to comprehend, understand, or grasp. It implies the attainment of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding through the application of rationality. By being rational, one can truly comprehend the realities of life and the deeper meanings behind various phenomena.
This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of using reason and intellect. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages Muslims to ponder upon the signs of His creation and to seek knowledge through observation, reflection, and critical thinking.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:190)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse highlights the importance of intellectual engagement with the world around us, as it leads to a deeper understanding of Allah's creation.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 30:8)
Do they not reflect upon themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers.
This verse emphasizes the need for self-reflection and introspection, which can only be achieved through the use of reason and intellect.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges Muslims to embrace rationality in order to gain a deeper understanding of the world and its complexities. By using our intellect, we can discern between truth and falsehood, make informed decisions, and navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and clarity.
Being rational allows us to critically analyze situations, evaluate evidence, and arrive at logical conclusions. It enables us to differentiate between right and wrong, good and evil, and make choices that align with our moral values and principles. Rationality also helps us to overcome biases, prejudices, and misconceptions, allowing us to embrace diverse perspectives and seek truth.
Moreover, being rational empowers us to seek knowledge and engage in lifelong learning. It motivates us to explore various fields of study, question assumptions, and expand our intellectual horizons. By constantly seeking knowledge, we can deepen our understanding of Islam, the world, and our own selves.
The consequences of embracing rationality are far-reaching. It leads to personal growth, intellectual development, and spiritual enlightenment. By being rational, we can strengthen our faith, as our understanding of Islam becomes grounded in reason and evidence. It also enhances our ability to engage in meaningful dialogue with others, fostering unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Be rational and you will discern
serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to utilize their intellect and reason in order to gain knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. By being rational, we can navigate the complexities of life, make informed decisions, and deepen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to embrace rationality and seek knowledge, as it is through intellectual engagement that we can truly discern the truth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be rational and guide us on the path of knowledge and wisdom.
