مَنْ ماتَ فاتَ۔
One who dies, passes away.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Death)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic phrase "مَنْ ماتَ فاتَ۔" from the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) translates to
One who dies, passes away.
This concise statement holds deep meaning and can be understood through the lens of the Quran.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us of the transient nature of this worldly life. In Surah Al-Imran, verse 185, Allah says, (Quran 3:185)
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection.
This verse emphasizes the inevitability of death and the fact that it is a universal experience for all human beings.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 57, Allah states, (Quran 29:57)
Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.
This verse serves as a reminder that death is not the end, but rather a transition to the hereafter, where we will be held accountable for our actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the reality of death and its certainty. It serves as a reminder that every soul will eventually depart from this world and move on to the next stage of existence. This understanding should motivate us to reflect upon our purpose in life and strive to fulfill our duties towards Allah and His creation.
The consequences of this realization are profound. Recognizing the transient nature of life allows us to prioritize our actions and focus on what truly matters. It reminds us to invest in the eternal life to come, rather than being solely preoccupied with worldly pursuits. This understanding also encourages us to seek forgiveness, reconcile with others, and mend broken relationships before it is too late.
Moreover, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder of the impermanence of worldly possessions and the futility of excessive attachment to material wealth. In Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20, Allah says, (Quran 57:20)
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children...
This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and encourages us to focus on the pursuit of righteousness and the accumulation of good deeds.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
One who dies, passes away
reminds us of the certainty of death and the transient nature of this worldly life. It urges us to reflect upon our purpose, prioritize our actions, and invest in the eternal life to come. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand the reality of death and guide us to live a life that is pleasing to Him.
